Climate adaptation
How businesses and investors think about resilience
Climate related perils and exposures seem to be increasing. International greenhouse gas and carbon abatement policies, decarbonizing the economy, investing in renewables and other technology are all necessary to slow climate change…but they are not enough. The odds are that there will be more wildfires, river flooding, drought, storm surge, and extreme heat situations. These events will have wildly variable impacts by geography, peril, wealth, vulnerability, and time frame. Governments apparently can’t or won’t invest ahead enough in adaptation and preparedness. Assets could be destroyed, people could be forced to migrate, public health could deteriorate. BUT! There is a huge pool of private capital on the sidelines, AND many excellent technologies and analytical tools are available to be deployed toward selective investments in resilience to address these problems. What is the state of the art in adaptation today – and what will be future opportunities?
